Every day, the population of the world drinks approximately 6 billion cups of tea. It is consumed in various ways- hot or cold, with sweeteners or without- in the most delectable flavours, in the form of popular teas. While the history of tea itself is shrouded in mystery and myth, its current and long lasting popularity is a force to be reckoned with. One of the reasons for its popularity is that people love the choices available in tea.

The simplicity of combining tea, herbs and spices during the brewing process offers brew masters an endless array of flavors to play with. Because of this dexterity in tea’s nature, new things like Bubble tea, Cheese tea and Nitro tea, making the headlines everywhere. However, there are some popular teas that we look at in the menu and order without blinking, because we know that they will taste amazing. There are some blends and flavours that are just timeless.

Some Of The Most Popular Teas In The World:

  1. English Breakfast Tea:

In 1843, Richard Davis, an Englishman, moved to America on a determined quest to be the best in the tea business. This, ultimately, gave rise to one of the most popular teas in the world- The English Breakfast Tea. In 1844, Davis used the Fujian province Congou tea as the base, blended it with the Golden Orange Pekoe and Pouchong, and named it the ‘English Breakfast tea’. Marketed as ‘one of the most popular teas in England’, this new blend was unrivalled for a while, until another rival purchased his blend in bulk, which was examined by Chinese experts and reproduced. However, after the 2nd Opium War in 1856, a ban placed on all trade with China led to the customisation of a new blend of this tea. The new English Breakfast tea was a mix of Assam, Ceylon and Kenyan teas and was even more popular than the previous one. This tea is revered for its heavy malty flavour, with notes of honey and a smoky taste. While the texture of this tea is smooth with rich colour, it has a crisp mouthfeel. As the most favoured morning beverage all over the world, not only does it open your eyes but also adds the freshness to your day’s start.

  2. Earl Grey Tea:

One of the very first flavoured teas ever created, every tea lover has tried this tea at least once in their lifetime. Flavoured with bergamot orange oil, the Earl Grey tea is amongst the most popular teas of the world. The initial accounts of this tea date back to 1820s in England. However, the first commercial advertisement of Earl Grey appeared in the 1880s by Charlton & Co. Named after the Prime Minister of Britain in 1830s, Charles Grey (2nd Earl Grey), this tea was believed to be created for him as a diplomatic perquisite. Despite this, there are few other stories that travel around the origins of the Earl Grey tea. Some say that the tea master used bergamot as a flavoring to balance the lime flavor in the water of the Grey estate. Another version speaks of how the blend was created by accident, when a gift of tea and bergamot oranges were shipped together from China and the flavour of the fruit was absorbed by the tea. Despite its confusing history and origins, there is no denying the fact that the Earl Grey tea is a fan favourite. The flavour of this tea is slightly smokey with hints of citrus. Made with a blend of Indian and Ceylon teas, it is so popular that many variations of this tea has become a hit in the market like Lady Grey tea, Yorkshire Grey etc.

  3. Masala Chai:

When we talk of popular teas, missing the masala chai is a sin. A tea found in almost every coffee and tea house in the world, masala chai and India share a bond steeped in tales of centuries old royalty and herbal medicine. It is said to have been created by an Indian king as a cleansing, spicy- sweet drink without any tea leaves. However, in 1853, when tea leaves made their way into local markets, it gave rise to the now known blend of masala chai, complete with spices, milk, sweeteners and tea. Initially, it wasn’t as widely consumed as today, for black tea wasn’t easy to afford for the local buyer. Things changed drastically as the CTC tea was introduced into the markets in 1960s, and masala chai became the neighborhood’s ‘go to drink’. The CTC’s bold, tannin rich flavour sat well with the existing sweet and spiciness of the drink. From an antioxidant rich base to immunity boosting properties, Masala chai is loaded with benefits for drinkers. Today, an average person consumes 3-4 cups of masala chai every day.

    Worlds Most Popular Teas

  4. Mint Green Tea:

A kind of tea that can be drunk both hot and iced, Mint green tea is as popular as popular teas can get. Not only admired for its refreshing taste, mint green tea is also appreciated for its indigestion and stress relieving properties, among many other benefits. Initially known by the name- Maghrebi mint tea/ Moroccan mint tea- it is a simple combination of mint leaves and green tea (sometimes black). The earliest references to this tea date back to 12th century in the accounts of scholar and traveller, Ibn Battuta. In Maghreb, it was made with a mixture of tea leaves exported from overseas and mint that was locally grown, making it one of the first examples of globalisation of cuisine.

  5. Darjeeling Tea:

Grown in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal, Darjeeling tea is one of the most popular teas from India. The origin of the Indian tea plantation was from the hills of Darjeeling, when in 1841, Archibald Campbell brought the plant seeds there as an experiment. By 1850s, tea was commercialised and the first tea garden in Darjeeling was opened in 1856. Processed in all forms, it has a thin bodied, light coloured liquor, a floral aroma with a tinge of astringent tannic and musky spiciness. Darjeeling tea comes in various varieties and grades, namely: First Flush, In Between, Second Flush, Monsoon Tea and Autumnal Flush. When sold, these teas are graded on the basis of size and quality into four basic grades- Whole leaf, Broken leaf, Fannings and Dust. Currently, there are 87 licensed estates spanning over the hills of Darjeeling and producing the finest grade its popular teas for all of the world.

  6. Chamomile Tea:

This famous tea has been around for centuries, with traces of its use dating back to over 2000 years. Famously called the ‘herbal medicine from the past with a bright future’, chamomile’s history begins in Egypt, 1550 BC. The flower multitasked as a remedy for fever, as well as a cosmetic product. Later on, the Romans used the flower to flavour drinks and incense. Chamomile is one of the most popular teas out there, considering that its average consumption is more than a million cups per day. Also known as the “Plant’s Physician” chamomile tea has different medical properties. It works as an Anti-inflammatory and Anti-cancer agent, all the while aiding in relief from cardiovascular and digestive ailments. In addition to this, chamomile tea has helped people with dermal conditions and osteoporosis for ages. Recently, it has been used as a remedy for anxiety and sleeping disorders. Not only is this tea filled with benefits for the human body, but also has a culturally rich past, which makes it a favourite of people all around the world.

While the list of popular teas is longer than this, there is no denying that the popularity of tea is skyrocketing day by day. Trends come and go. But being the most widely consumed beverage after water, tea is here to stay.

Short, long, spikes, or maybe a bob; we all love having healthy hair in various textures. Unfortunately, we spend a lot of money maintaining them as well. What most people don’t realise is that the quality of our hair largely depends on what we consume. The healthier our diet is the healthier our hair is. And when it comes to healthy habits, the first name that rolls off of our tongues is green tea. For ages, green tea has secretly maintained the lustrous shine of its drinkers’ hair. Known as a packaged miracle, green tea has enough antioxidants to benefit not just our hair but our entire bodies as well.

Here’s an insight on how good is green tea for hair:

Rich in Antioxidants and Essential Compounds

Green tea is rich in antioxidants like catechins and polyphenols. Not only do these antioxidants help build a better immunity of the body but also the hair. Catechins present in green tea aid in repressing DHT or Dihydrotestosterone. DHT is the hormone responsible for hair thinning and hair fall from the roots. It blocks 5-alpha-reductase, an enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT. Thus, it stops the shrinkage of the hair follicles and strengthens the hair roots. The Epigallocatechin gallate or EGCG polyphenol, present in green tea promotes hair growth on a cellular level.  It strengthens the roots and activates the hair follicles. This encourages hair re-growth. Green tea also contains natural compounds like carotenoids, zinc, chromium, ascorbic acid, selenium, and manganese. Except chromium and manganese, all the other compounds help to prevent hair loss and stimulate hair re-growth.

Fights Stress and Depression

Stress is a major reason for deformity of hair structure and hair fall. Excessive stress can change the texture of your hair. Hair may develop a bulb at the tips, or even split ends. It may also start looking unnecessarily dry or lifeless. Stress tends to increase the production of adrenaline in our bodies, which in turn promotes excessive growth of testosterone. Testosterone is a male hormone that has huge implications on hair growth, frequently causing hair loss and/or hair thinning. Depression and hair loss are linked and can affect the quality of our hair, making them dry and brittle. Green tea is rich in the amino acid L-Theanine, which has a calming effect on people who drink it. Theanine stimulates production of brain waves known as alpha waves which alter the levels of neurotransmitters in the brain such as serotonin and dopamine. Also known as ‘happy hormones’, these can affect the moods of a person, acting as supplements for anxiety and stress. This beverage not only soothes the mind of the drinker but also helps them get a good night sleep.

Green Tea for Hair Growth

Regulates Blood Flow to the Scalp

Our blood vessels are lined with deposits of plaque. Plaque is a combination of cholesterol, calcium, fat and other substances found in our blood. Plaque hardens over time and narrows our arteries which can cause a problem in smooth blood flow. Green tea breaks down plaque in blood vessels, therefore promoting blood flow in all organs of the body, including the scalp. The high levels of anti-oxidants filter out free radicals from the blood, reducing the toxicity of it. Due to this, our hair is less damaged and dry. The good regulation of blood to the scalp gives the hair a rich base for growth. Hair builds out healthier and thicker.

 Anti-inflammatory in nature

Dry scalp and dandruff can cause inflammation. Dandruff also causes hair breakage and acts as a barrier that blocks new hair follicles from growing properly. Plus, a flaky, itchy scalp is never a great sight. Green tea not only helps soothe dry scalp from the inside, but also from the outside. Our hair is prone to another danger known as parasites. Parasites are not easily diagnosed and tend to weaken hair at the roots. A warm green tea rinse can destroy bacterial and fungal parasites. Regularly used, it can make the hair shinier and stronger from within.

Rich in vitamin B and C

Split ends are a recurring problem. They make our hair dry, thin and fuzzy looking. They generally happen due to mistreatment of hair with chemicals, and our lousy dietary habits. Hair can split at the ends due to insufficient Vitamin B consumption. Green tea is a wonderful source of vitamin B (pathothenic acid). It increases the hair’s moisture retention capacity, which in turn helps get rid of split ends and brittleness in hair. The Vitamin C counters dullness and makes the hair softer.

The pros of green tea for hair are many. Which is why, green tea helps in getting rid of dullness and damage of hair, all the while promoting hair regrowth. Green tea for hair is a wonderful solution, which not only weighs right for our body but also our pockets.

Green tea happens to be one of the most popular health beverages in today’s times. If you love yourself some good tea and want to enjoy its health benefits, then switch over to the green brew and see yourself transform. Having said that, we insist, that this tea is no overnight miracle, but a miracle worker instead. To see the magic unfold you have to consistently have this brew on the daily to be able to notice a slight difference in a few months. If you practice patience and couple this beverage with a good lifestyle, ample sleep, and healthy eating habits, you will be able to notice a drastic difference.

Most people who have green tea on the daily have excellent skin, great hair, and a balanced body weight. They also flaunt a strong immune system, as the antioxidant present in green tea helps in warding off various diseases. However, the question remains, how much green tea is too much green tea? The fact of the matter is that green tea, like every other thing in the world should be consumed in moderation, an excess of anything is bad for human health and this brew is no different.

Many studies have come to the conclusion that around 3 cups of green tea a day, is the ideal amount. Anything exceeding this can cause a bit of a disruption in your system. The University of Maryland conducted a research wherein they concluded that 240 to 320 milligrams of polyphenols a day is the perfect mount. This too accounts for about 2 to 3 cups of green tea in a day.

An Excessive Amount of Green Tea in a Day Can Cause:

  • A headache
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Heartburn

  • It helps in protecting against breast and prostate cancer and reduces your chances of developing type 2 Diabetes.
  • Green tea is often related to weight loss. The brew has the ability to boost metabolism in the body, whilst, accelerating the natural fat burning process within the body, which is known as lipolysis.
  • It contains caffeine, which can really help you to push harder during a workout. If you have a cup of green tea around 15 minutes prior to workout, you will feel a lot more energetic when you hit the gym.
  • A few studies have suggested that green tea alone can help in burning an additional 75 to 100 calories per day.

Green Tea Weight Loss

If you are consuming this brew for weight loss purposes, then it will better if you have it without any sugar or sugar supplements, to make sure that the tea remains to be a zero calorie beverage. This will make sure that the green tea contributes to a significant amount of weight loss over a long period of time. Apart from that, this brew is known for strengthening the heart by reducing cholesterol levels. It aids in removing the plaque from the arteries of the heart, helping it to pump blood faster. This, in turn, normalizes blood pressure levels and allows the heart to function much better.

Green tea is widely available in the market, but not all of them are of the best quality. You can only achieve the aforementioned health benefits of green tea by purchasing the brew from a reputable and trusted tea seller like Teafloor. Try and avoid buying tea bags as the brew may be adulterated and instead opt for loose leaf tea.

Green tea packs in it a great deal of health. It contains natural flavonoids that are loaded with natural antioxidants which accounts for the health benefits of green tea, starting from lowering your blood pressure and LDL cholesterol, reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke and also reduce your risk of certain canters (rectal, colon, skin). It also aids in good oral hygiene and bone development. All the variety of tea comes from the same shrub called Camellia sinensis and the only difference which makes the green tea is the process by which it is made. To understand this let us assume the case of black and green tea. Black tea is made from the process of fermentation while green tea doesn’t undergo fermentation. This is the main reason green tea is loaded with antioxidants and tastes different from the black tea. During green tea production, leaves are harvested, withered, and then heated through steaming (Japanese style) or pan-firing (Chinese style). This process halts oxidation so the leaves retain their color and delicate, fresh flavor.

Green tea Infusion

When it comes to the infusion part, green tea has a more delicate taste and is light green/golden in color. The original colour of the tea comes to be pale green liquid after brewing and has a grassy flavor. Since, the tea doesn’t undergo oxidation, green tea is bitter and becomes mores astringent if steeped for longer time.

Caffeine content

Green tea typically has less caffeine than black tea but it may have more too depending on the plant variety. Usually, the caffeine is less as compared to black tea, it is said that it has only one-fourth caffeine of the black tea. The caffeine content of green tea ranges from 24-40 mg per cup and black tea ranges from 14-61 mg per cup. Due to this reason, green tea is an ideal drink for bed time as it doesn’t interrupt with your sleep due to low caffeine content.

Antioxidants

Green tea leaves do not undergo the process of fermentation and hence are least oxidized. They have more polyphenols as compared to other varieties of tea, making it rich in antioxidants. The main antioxidant found is the EGCG. Due to this green tea is highly helpful in weight loss, prevents various forms of cancer and aids in a healthy digestion. This clearly indicates that green tea holds a superior position to all the other varieties of tea when it comes to health benefits.
